MOTIVATION: noun
an internal state that propels individuals to engage in goal-directed behavior
Last weekend was filled with basketball, baseball, and softball between my two kids.
Six games in total between Saturday and Sunday.
And for my wife and I, we wouldn’t want it any other way.
Each game comes with their little successes, failures, and opportunities to get better.
As parents, we leverage youth sports as a way to teach our kids mindset, work ethic, and the ups and downs of life in general.
While at my daughter’s softball game, I could hear the girls getting pumped up for their game by starting a team chant in the dugout.
My daughter started yelling out…
“I’M FIRED UP, YOU FIRED UP?!”
Then the entire team responded with an emphatic… “YEAH!”
She would repeat it again, and once more the team responded with… “YEAH!”
Then she yells out… “I CAN’T HEAR YOU!” and calls out another teammate’s name.
Then that girl started the chant over again and the team did this about 3 or 4 times.
As a parent, it’s so fun to watch them get excited and “FIRED UP” for their game.
Imagine being one of the girls in the dugout going through this pre-game chant.
The hairs sticking up on their little arms, getting the chills, feeling confident, and sparking the energy to go out there on that field and give it their all.
It sets the tone for their game.
It drives motivation to do their best.
However, it’s not the motivation that helps them win the game.
It may get them out there on the field and they’ll feel the fire to play great, but it’s discipline that’s required for success long term.
🤯 THE MINDSET SHIFT 🤯
Motivation is temporary.
In order to achieve what you want, strong habits and discipline are a must.
If what you want means that much to you, you’ll need to fight through some un-motivating days along the way.
Those days where you make excuses and find reasons why not.
Those days where the world seems to be caving in on you.
Those days where you just don’t think you can do it.
Those days where you don’t feel like it.
It’s those days, when motivation lacks…
…discipline prevails.
Building an identity shift is where it starts.
Put in the work to develop better habits and consistency.
Whether it’s a new health routine, business aspirations, or relationship goals…
…when things become difficult and you want to quit, or you’re unmotivated and you want to skip it, become the person who does it anyway.
Over time, it adds a little more cement to solidify your foundation.
Motivation will get you going…
…but it’s discipline that will keep you going.
