“Chase your dreams, work hard, and never settle for mediocrity.”
If you’re a golf fan, you know all about it.
If you live in Arizona, you’ve most likely been there.
This week in Scottsdale brings the a tounrament for the ages that goes by many names…
The Waste Management Open 🏌️♂️
The Phoenix Open 🌵
The Greatest Show on Grass ⛳
The Waste(d) Management Open 🍺
THE PEOPLE’S OPEN! 🙌
This is golf’s most unique event of the year with its party atmosphere, stemmed from the iconic 16th hole.
Hole 16 is a simple, run of the mill, par three that turns into an Animal House style stadium, complete with suites and bleachers, filled with 20,000+ golf hooligans waiting to see a hole in one.
This par three has seen 11 aces since it moved to TPC Scottsdale in 1987.
Remember, all the nut-balls going wild for this one from two years ago?
Sam Ryder’s Hole in One on the 16th - 2022
They don’t call it the People’s Open for no reason…
Nearly anything goes… and when I say anything you might see…
Ridiculous caddy Races after almost hitting Aces.🏃♂️
Players showing of their Guts after rolling in Putts.⛳
Guys shot-gunning Beers and chest bumping their Peers.🍻
Girls in rompers stumbling in their Heels and falling down Hills.👠
Passing on the Rest for late night concerts at the infamous Bird’s Nest.🎸
Okay, that was some corny rhyming skills, but you get the point. 🙈
It’s a blast… It’s wild… It’s debauchery…
It’s like none other…
…and WE THE PEOPLE are here for it. 🙌
However, there’s more to this story than the shenanigans that ensue each year…
The Phoenix Open has origins dating all the way back to 1932.
In 1937, there was a handful of Arizona business men striving to build a better and stronger Phoenix, recruited by the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce to help manage various events around town.
It started with five executives, who then each recruited 10 additional leaders in their network, totaling 55 men.
This is an exclusive fraternity who made a HUGE IMPACT and still are to this day.
This incredible group calls themselves the… THUNDERBIRDS.
One of the early inductees was Bob Goldwater, an avid golfer. Goldwater thought it would be a great idea to sponsor a golf tournament. That first year, Goldwater sold the tickets, recruited volunteers and set up the golf course at the Phoenix Country Club. The Phoenix Open caught on, and in 79 years, has developed into one of the leading stops on the PGA TOUR.

Over time, the Thunderbirds grew into a large philanthropic organization with a mission of promoting the Valley of the Sun through sports and began running the Phoenix Open since it’s inception in the late 1930s.
Form then on, they’ve never relinquished management of this amazing event and have built it into what’s widely regarded as one of the most sought after and exhilarating golf tournaments to attend around the world. 🌎
Even winning the PGA Golf Tournament of the Year four times.
If you brave the crowds out there during tourney weekend, you’ll find the Thunderbirds running around in their famous blue sport coats, in what can be sometimes blistering heat, even in early February out here in AZ. 🥵
This year, though…
…it’s a rainy and chilly week here in Scottsdale. 🌧️
But that will definitely not stop the crowds of spectators amassing to over 700,000 PEOPLE 😱 hanging out at the TPC course this week.

The most amazing aspect of the PHX OPEN, that not a lot of people know, is how Thunderbirds Charities raises millions of dollars every year for the community.
Last year, they raised a record $14.5 MILLION from the WM Open alone.
It’s worth noting that just last year, this made up nearly 8% of all funds raised in it’s 88 year history, which is more than $190 MILLION raised by the Thunderbirds to date. 💰
Many of those non-profits they raise funds for, support sports, health, education, the arts, social services, and improving the lives of children and families.
This golf tournament brings out some of the best networking and relationship building opportunities possible…
Businesses are sponsoring bays and cabanas to bring clients and partners for a unique experience.
Teams are going together to hang out, get out of the office, and enjoy the atmosphere to strengthen comradery.
Friends and family are joining together to walk around the course and enjoy casual conversation.
Parents are bringing their kids to see some of the world’s best golfers in action.
And just think… 🤔
If those first five men didn’t say YES to an amazing opportunity offered to them by the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce…
…to start the first ever Special Events Committee that would allow them to venture into new fields, then Mr. Goldwater wouldn’t have joined forces.
…And if he didn’t join the Thunderbirds, then his idea for sponsoring a golf event may not have come to fruition.
…And without the Father of the Phoenix Open’s success, there’s a good chance this annual event would not be what it is today.
…And most importantly be the staple for an organization raising TENS OF MILLIONS of dollars per year for the surrounding community and non-profits in Phoenix, Arizona. 🌵
OPPORTUNITY IS EVERYWHERE, MY FRIENDS. 🤝
Say YES to the things that align, create opportunity from opportunity, and enjoy the incredible PIVOTAL MOMENTS and SUCCESS along the way. 🤩
Often times, the catalyst to long lasting legacy and creating something you can be extremely proud of, comes from developing relationships with people closely aligned on the same mission as you.
Whether it’s joining a referral networking group like BNI to grow your business…
…or an exclusive mastermind group for a MINDSET SHIFT, similar to the men’s group I’m in, Junto.
…or a community, created for both men and women, focused on being the best versions of themselves in their personal life to achieve MASSIVE success in their professional life, like 👉 OFAM.
When you have the POWER of COMMUNITY on your side, you really never know what you could learn, what it could lead to, or the IMPACT you could make.
Just like Bob Goldwater found his, get out there and find YOURS.
Cheers to all those heading out to the WM Open this week.
Stay safe, stay dry, and have fun people watching. 🤣
